Question: What is atonement (Kaffara) for breaking Fast of Ramadan deliberately?
Answer: The atonement (Kaffara) for breaking a Fast of Ramadan deliberately is mentioned in the book of Hadith by Bukhari, In Sahih Bukhari Hadith Number 1936, it is mentioned that Prophet (PBUH) ordered a Sahabi who broke the fast deliberately, to either "Free a slave", if he cannot do that, then "fast for two months consecutively", or if he cannot do that, "feed 60 needy people".
Although this is concerned with one who has broken his Fast by intercourse with his wife, Imam Ibn Hajar in Fathul Bari said that the same applies for the one who broke his fast intentionally by eating or drinking.
Question: What is expiation (Kaffara) for breaking Optional Fast (Nafl Roza) ?
Answer: As an Optional Fast (Nafl Roza) is not something mandatory in Shariat but something one bounds himself on to get closeness of Allah Subhanawatala, so there is no expiation (Kaffara) to break an Optional Fast (Nafl Roza) but to make up for that broken fast later whenever you can.
Question: What amount of Fidya to be paid by one who is unable to fast for the reason of too old age?
Answer: It is mentioned in Quran 2:184 and Hadith (Bukhari, Muslim) that for one who cannot fast due to old age or permanent illness, must feed a poor person every day for missed fasts. So in Ramadan, if a person cannot fast due to old age, he must feed a poor person two meals a day throughout Ramadan or he can pay him the amount adjudged for the meals of whole month of Ramadan.
